Earrings and Glucosamine

Each Day since two towers collapsed in flame and molten metal
I have remembered to put on my earrings,
to take glucosamine "between meals"
and the water the spider plant hanging over the steep stairs.

I have remembered birthdays,
reached out to the dying
and eaten wisely and well.

But nightmares gallop into my sleep.

During the day I push down those horsemen of the Apocalypse,
push them down, out of sight
but they rear up before the sunrise in terrifying dreams.

The sun rises each morning,
I remember to put on my earrings,
to take glucosamine "between meals"
as my psyche buries my fears until the night.
