On September 11, 2002 many United Nations Non Governmental Representatives participating in the annual UN Department of Public Information Conference attended the UN Interfaith Service at St. Bartholomew’s Church. Ribbons were displayed at the ceremony.

Some of us UN NGO Representatives attending the service then carried the displayed Ribbon panels down 51st St. past the Fire House and the 17th Precinct Police Station (both places lost loved ones on 9/11/01) to the UN Dag Hammarskjold Plaza Park. We then joined the Ribbon panels together with a moment of silent meditation/prayer and the Interfaith Litany was read for peace.

We proceeded by subway carrying the Ribbons to the City Hall Plaza Park, rain drops fell with an almost clear blue sky at the park as we walked around holding the Ribbon panels. A few people remarked that the rain drops were the tears of those lost on September 11, 2001. We then walked with the Ribbons to the World Trade Center Memorial. Again the Ribbons were joined together in a moment of silent meditation/prayer and the Interfaith Litany was read for peace.

While walking throughout the city people showed an interest for the Ribbon project. We sensed that many wanted to share their wish for peace and love by doing something positive. Creating/joining Ribbon (cloth panels with peoples hand crafted representations/pictures of peace on them) is a way of finding common ground with others for peace world wide.
